CMO cannt be CIO, CIO focus on over all Business analytic, and design system application & IT Infra accordingly where as as CMO mainly focus only on brand promotion marketing strategy. CMO may be copled with CIO for Business Growth and better social web resource utilization.

Having run Marketing and IT at different times in my career, I can safely say that these roles are very very different, any large enterprise will require both these roles. Of course, IT spends for Marketing will rise very quickly, which requires closer collaboration between CIOs and CMOs.

I agree with Anant. CIO is new position and will continue.CIO role is as crictical as CFO , CMO and other C level position. Large Corporate definitely will have CIO position. The differance in the coming year will be that CIO role will not be pure Technical. CIO has to play key role in Business growth
